I'm a dutch mycologist who has delved into many realms within the fungal sphere.
As a trained researcher, self-taught forager and curious creative it is my aim to explore the boundaries of what we know of mushrooms and unlock the full potential of mycelium through material research, workshops, and art & design.
Where research is the necessary drive towards innovation, workshops are vessels not only for knowledge diffusion but also for dialogue and exchange. Art & design bridge the gap between what research can show us and what it can't, offering different ways to engage with scientific ideas. By working with fungi, we can step beyond a purely human-centred perspective and better appreciate the relationships that shape the living world. In this regard creative practice can make the often-hidden fungal world accessible to a wider audience, encouraging curiosity and creating new connections between science, design, and everyday experience.
Current material research includes experimentation in colour, shape, mixed composition, on-sight growing methodologies and biobased post-processing of mycelium. Aimed for construction and exhibitional applications, the focus lies on the development of doors, walls and building blocks. The mushroom establishment of SPORE.NL in Almere facilitates a testing ground where these experiments can be conducted, monitored and showcased.
Workshops revolve around wild foraging, where one learns how fungi are the ultimate closers of the carbon cycle, thereby emphasizing their indispensible role in maintaining the complex natural systems we tend to take for granted. Mushroom identification is explained through demonstration and foraging ethics are discussed.
No mushrooms are hurt during the workshops.
